One of my favorite romhacks of all time. This is THE hack I show casuals when trying to explain what I do as a romhacker rather than try to explain a bunch of technical stuff because everyone played the hell out of the Genesis/Megadrive port of MK back in the day and everyone remembers how much the original Probe developed game fell short of the arcade. This is the hack that got me back into romhacking after years as a hobbyist making small changes to games for my own enjoyment and discovering there is a whole scene full of talented romhackers these days.
But hey, Paulo, I've been trying to contact you for some time about this hack (you don't seem to use any of the same forums or outlets that I do) because Billytime Games and I tried to improve the blood system a while back but got stymied on it due to the fact that I'm better versed in 6502 language and not so much in 68k and Billytime was busy with real life and other hacks he had in the pipeline... I'm still interested in improving the blood physics system and graphics to better match the arcade original. I know it can be done (and probably fairly easily) with the right person coding and who better than the guy who created the hack to begin with? Billy and I already learned how the rom loads and unloads the graphics for the blood. We just need to program it to emulate the arcade in terms of physics and implement that in game during matches. I already have an idea of where in the Megadrive ROM we can look at code that better matches the way the blood behaves in the arcade original. Please reply if you are interested in updating this epic hack to be even better and we can set something up from there. I know you are a busy guy with many projects on your plate, but I believe your original hack was almost perfect except for in this one area... I already have the graphic assets ready to go from when Billytime and I attempted this. Let me know. I'm gonna make this a thing one way or the other! Lol. Cheers
I suppose I can explain why I asked. I've a Genesis Mortal Kombat cartridge and was planning to just bring my own cartridge over trying to track down a beta build if that's an option. Of course, since it comes from the cartridge, it will need to apply to a version without a header.
Unfortunatelly, it's not legal, but the patch proccess is pretty easy: Download LunarIPS, select the mkae.ips patch then select the "Mortal Kombat (USA, Europe) (Rev A) (Beta)" ROM and voila

6 button detection doesn't seem to work when played via emulator Libretro/RetroArch 'Genesis Plus GX' core :(Never mind, I'm a dummy...the emulator's 3/6-button option was moved to 'Controls' from the actual 'Core Options', and I thought it had been REmoved.
I patched with 1.0c but the version info still shows 1.0, 2021/12/24
Since the 1.0c is just a small control fix, i dont changed it, but for a future update it will be changed for sure!
Do you think you can create a version that is able to be applied to the US release version of the game instead of the Beta?
Yeah i can, but its really that necessary? Use the Mortal Kombat (W) REV A (beta) ROM

Does this hack need REV A (Beta) to work? Because sadly, from my testing, it doesn't work with REV 00 of the game.
Yes, you can see this info on the DOWNLOAD screen.
Does this hack fix the bug where the C button on 3rd party controllers does nothing when played on a Model 1?
YES
